Commercial concrete layer to Christmas installer… How did it happen?

Some people must wonder how a commercial construction worker can end up working for a Christmas company and now also a commercial cleaning company. Well, as different as these industries might seem, there are some similarities.

About six years ago, I was working as a commercial concrete layer. The actual work I was doing was very seasonal, busy in the summer months, but less so during the winter- as it was very weather dependent, which is how I first found out about Fizzco. A friend suggested I contact a firm from Skipton about working through the Christmas period on Christmas decorations. I was a bit apprehensive about this, as I first thought there could not be much work in putting up Christmas decorations; how wrong could I be!

That first season in 2013 opened my eyes to the madness and hard work involved with installing an industrial-sized Christmas decoration, and I loved it. A year later, the company I was originally working for was obtained by Fizzco, and the real journey began. In a passing conversation with Russell (operations director) on a shopping centre mall at about 2 am in the morning, I mentioned that I had had enough of the construction industry and was looking for something else.

Fast forward three months, and a permanent job offer for all year round were on the table. I jumped at the chance, not really knowing what was ahead of me. I moved over 90 miles from Yorkshire to Lincolnshire, and I am now in my third year at Fizzco. I look forward to taking a leading role in the development and running of Fizzco maintenance, using the skills I have learnt over the past three years and discovering new ones.
